The Ultimate Dutch Oven® was invented by Dent Sorensen, from Salina, Utah. Dent was raised on a ranch and has worked with cattle all his life. Years of cooking over a campfire helped inspire the Ultimate Dutch Oven®.
In the early 70´s Dent´s wife Valeen was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.). In an effort to provide healthier food for his wife, Dent began exploring with different ways of using a Dutch oven to cook food.
The first concept design for the Ultimate Dutch Oven® came from a tire rim. Dent figured that a conventional oven used circular heat to cook, why couldn´t a Dutch oven do the same. Making some modifications to the tire rim with the help of Newell Hatch of Aurora, Utah, the first convention Dutch oven was created.
After several different prototypes, Dent eventually made an oven from cast iron refining the oven to perfection. He then made another oven made of aluminum but designed with thicker walls. These designs worked so well that he filed for a patent for the design. Dent sold his first three cast iron ovens to his children, Denene, Eddie, and Craig.
Dent´s daughter met Ty Measom, the president of Camp Chef at a trade show in Las Vegas. Camp Chef and the Sorensen´s got together at the show to discuss the possibilities of the new Dutch oven.
Today with the help of Camp Chef, the Ultimate Dutch Oven® has become a household name in the Dutch oven business. The Ultimate Dutch Oven® is now made of cast iron, is 14 inches in diameter, has a deep well with a raised lid with legs so it can be turned over and used as a griddle. There are two racks (upper and lower) the purpose of the racks is to layer the food and also add more space for food in the Dutch oven. By doing so you can cook as much food as an 18 inch oven!
The main design to the Ultimate Dutch Oven® is the cone. The cone brings the hot air into the oven. This heat hits the lid and falls back down to the bottom, circulating the heat around the food just like a conventional oven.
Because of this design, you can cook your meals in half the time, without top heat, and without stirring your food as much. You also use no oil, making cooking healthy and easy to clean up. Your meat will cook in its own juices. The only time that briquettes are needed is for bread (browning propose only). If you cook a chicken or turkey, you place it over the cone and let the bird cook from the inside-out. You can cook on anything from a campfire in the country to your range at home.
Dent cooks in his Ultimate Dutch Oven® at least one meal a day! It is a healthier way of cooking and he gets to enjoy Dutch oven cooking everyday.
